Bee Swarms vs Beehives

Both Africanized honey bees and European honey bees live in Rancho Palos Verdes, so if you are seeing a swarm or a hive on your property it is simply because they live in the same area as you.  Now, there is a distinction between a hive and a swarm that you need to be aware of:

  • Swarms - A swarm of bees can be found on the branches in the trees, or just about any outdoor area.  Swarms take place when a colony outgrows the hive and splits.  Typically, a second queen leaves the hive and takes half of the colony with her.  Until they find a home, they will settle in one spot protecting the queen.  At this time the bees are fairly docile because they do not have a hive to protect.  Even Africanized honey bees aren’t aggressive at this point.
  • Beehives - Beehives are the home of the colony.  This is where the queen lays her eggs.  The honeycomb is built in the hive and it is where the honey is produced.  Hives can be built in many places but typically they are built where they can be protected easily.  Hollowed out trees, wall cavities, between the walls of a home can all be homes to a hive.

Treatment

3 Queens Bee Removal is dedicated to controlling and removing bees with only the best, most effective products the market has to offer.  Depending on where the swarm or hive is located willdictate which products and methods we use.  A swarm outside the home is very different from one inside the home.  We strive to always use the most environmentally friendly products available and in some instances we do not even need chemical methods to remove the bees.

We send out only California state licensed technicians that are specially trained in dealing with Africanized honey bees.  3 Queens is known for our high quality technicians and out ability to do the job right the first time.

Prevention

Although there is no way to stop a swarm from taking a rest in your tree, there are a few measures you can take to make it a little harder for them to move into your home.  Bees love to build their hives in dark, secure places.  A wall cavity or attic space is a great location for a hive to feel secure.  Follow these tips to discourage the bees from your home:

  • Seal Around Your Home - Using caulk, seal cracks or spaces in walls, along eaves, and rooflines.
  • Fill Spaces - Fill empty spaces in walls with foam insulation.
  • Screen Vents - Attic vents, baffling, or other vents are open doors for bees to come in and make their home.  Install fine mesh screening in these tiny openings to prevent their entrance.
